Physio and Occupational Therapy
Our Physio and Occupational therapists work with babies and preschoolers who may have trouble with functional movement. We work closely with families and caregivers to find ways to help your child to move with success. Things we can help with include:
Babies who are having difficulty with:
Feeding – suck, swallow, spoon.
Head control and position.
Learning to sit, crawl, stand or walk.
Settling to sleep or play quietly on their own.
Toddlers who are having difficulty with:
Balance – changing direction, uneven ground, climbing.
Beginning self feeding
New places, crowds, noise, lights, smells, swings, textures (sensory issues).
Using hands to play.
Preschoolers who are having difficulty with:
Jumping, one foot balance, hopping, climbing.
Playing with balls.
Riding a trike / bike.
Stacking blocks, doing puzzles, threading beads, colouring.
Dressing self.
Sensory issues as above (places, crowds etc.) and are falling apart because of it.
Children with many needs and little movement:
Choosing and ordering special equipment (walkers, wheelchairs etc.)
Accessing funding sources for equipment.
Changes to help child do more (e.g. foam liner for swing seat or wagon)
Our department has both a Physical Therapist and an Occupational Therapist who have extra training and experience working with infants and children. Although our training and focus are slightly different, many of our skills overlap. We will try to match you up with the Therapist whose skills can best meet your child’s needs.
The Initial Visit will be booked as soon as possible. The visit can be in your home or at NONA, whichever works best for you and your child. The assessment usually involves us watching and feeling how your child plays and moves and then introducing challenges in the form of simple games and activities. We will take note of what’s working well for your child, and where s/he runs into difficulties. We won’t be “doing exercises” to “fix” your child, but rather working with you to find ways of holding, carrying and playing with your child to help her/ him move, play and function more effectively.
Follow – Up visits will booked according to the child and family’s needs – usually within 4 to 6 weeks, depending on need, age and rate of change. You and your child may be invited to participate in one of our groups. This allows us to connect with you more frequently and gives you a chance to connect with other parents and children with similar problems / concerns.
For babies and toddlers, we usually go to the home, so that the child and family are comfortable in their own setting – and to make sure that our ideas fit with your space. Older children are often seen at NONA where there is more space and tools to challenge skills.
We work closely with the other NONA programs that you and your child are involved with. We are available to consult to community settings including preschools, daycares and recreation programs.
Involvement with the Physio and Occupational Therapy program is voluntary. We need your help in making sure it works for you and your family. We rely on you because you know your child best and can read your child’s cues. If there are any concerns, let us know that we can work with you on them. Once things work and you see the changes we all wanted, we’ll cheer with you and say good-bye!
